Drabble Fic - The Comic

Summary: Big brother Dean, sick Sam and a batman comic.

The Comic

Dean lays it carefully onto the battered tabletop. His very own batman comic; not jealously glanced at over a classmate's shoulder, or lifted from the trash all battered and torn. This is brand new, bought with his own money after hours of shovelling snow from driveways.

“Batman!” Sam presses his wiry body into Dean's side, the fiery heat of fever now cooling. Sam's staring at the comic like it's made of gold; his eyes bright and alive for the first time in days.

Dean takes a breath, and ruffles Sam's hair. “Yeah, kiddo. I got it for you.”

Aw man, I love how this tiny slice of life shows just how precious little things had to be to the Winchesters, how they just couldn't have what a lot of the other kids they must have met in all their schools had...I mean not even a normal life but something as simple as a comic. A luxury, for them. The comic as gold and Sam's bright eyes: image, perfect. <3

And to see Dean so excited to have one, and the sacrifice it for his brother, seemed like such a Dean thing to do. Oh these boys!!!

Oh Dean! For one brief, glorious moment, you did something for yourself. And then obligation and the need to care for others reared its head again.
Sometimes I just don't know whether to hug that boy or give him a stern lecture about looking after himself too. Maybe both.

I love this so much! You pack so many feels into so few words. What a gift! Dean shoveling driveways to earn the money, worrying about Sam and taking care of him all feverish and sick (where's John again?) Sam's excitement and Dean's love snd sacrifice, all conveyed so compactly. Wow.
