Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it.

I've done this challenge every year since 2014 (I'm a sucker for tradition!) I think it's a great way to see in a new year; allowing you the time and space to really reminisce, reflect and evaluate your fandom experience, and what it means to you. It encourages you to meet and touch base with people from other fandoms which is something that I don't often do (and I should do more of!). It also gives me an opportunity to post more, and to share some more personal things which I'd like to do more of this year.

But most of all it's a place of positivity and encouragement, and a wonderful way to connect with like-minded people who all treasure their fandom experience ♥

In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom.

This is a fascinating challenge, and I'm not quite sure how to answer it. In general, I feel that fandom has become more accessible and perhaps more commonplace than it was when I found it in 2006. I think more people get involved in it now and perhaps it's become more mainstream. For example, in the UK when an episode of Game of Thrones airs there's a TV show on after it that's basically a fandom TV show; people analyse the episode, they ask and answer questions, they fill in blanks and highlight things some people might have missed, they make predictions about what might happen, and study characters. This would never have happened a few years ago and I think this will only expand with time and we'll see more and more people get involved in fandom in all sorts of new ways.

SPN is a massive fandom, but if you spread that over all the different platforms we now have it is still possible (and perhaps more likely) to have a small community feel in a fandom of this size, and that's my experience here on LJ. There's a lot of talk about quiet it gets here, but I like to interact daily/weekly/monthly etc with the people that I know and recognise, and I like to meet new people and squee over our Show. Platforms will always change, but hopefully we'll still be able to find each other ♥

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I tend to have similar fannish goals every year, and I'm not great at following through with them all, but if I only achieve one I'll be happy:

1. I'd like to post more on LJ. I do post fics, episode drabbles, recs etc, but I'd like to be a bit more active here in terms of posting on my journal; whether that's more personal posts or just something random. I have a terrible habit of talking myself out of posting things, and overthinking too much. I need to stop that.
2. Last year I wanted to complete and post a fic that wasn't linked to a challenge, and I managed it. So I'd like to match that, or even maybe increase it if I can.
3. Carry on writing a drabble for each episode of season 14 (so far, so good. I did this for seasons 11, 12 and 13 and I'd like to keep it up as it helps to keep me more active in fandom).
4. Work with an artist on a collaboration (fingers crossed I can do this for [livejournal.com profile] gencestbang).
5. Be more positive; with Show, in my posts, in my personal life, and just in general.

In your own space, create your own challenge.

I'm challenging myself to make more fandom friends. I often find myself admiring someone's posts, or I'm a fan of their work and I've seen them around, but for whatever reason I hold back on friending them. So I'm going to press that friend button more! Also I'm always open to making new friends, so please accept this as an invitation to stop by and say hello.

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

I often struggle to write without prompts and a deadlines to guide me, but occasionally an idea will just come seemingly out of nowhere, or I'll get inspiration from other TV shows, books, movies, articles, the news, or sometimes from conversations with fandom friends and other fanworks.

My not so secret tool when I'm struggling is to brainstorm with my friend and beta [livejournal.com profile] harrigan, and that will always result in something that I look forward to writing (I honestly don't think I'd be writing if it wasn't for her). I tend to write a rough outline and will sit for that for a while and usually a few sentences or speeches from characters will come and I'll jot those down. Then I'll jump in and start to write. I almost always try to hash out the opening first, and will usually have a few words for the ending too. I also find that a work environment at a desktop computer suits my writing style (which means that I do the majority of my writing in my lunch hour, or I'll stay late in the office and do a bit then). It isn't a perfect solution, as sometimes I have to stop when I've found a good flow, and picking it back up after stopping can be hard, but I find less distractions there than when I'm at home on my laptop where there's always something else I should be doing.

One thing that I always find hard is writing titles and summaries. If a title doesn't come to me early on, I'm doomed, and I just about always find summaries challenging. I don't think there's anything I can do to solve that, but hey, if anyone has any secrets up their sleeve I'm all ears!!!

Create a fanwork.

I'm sure you're all completely tired of me going on and on about it, but I'm currently writing my fic entry for the [livejournal.com profile] gencestbang and while this might be bending the rules somewhat, here's teeny tiny snippet of it:

The drive is long, but in reality it's only a couple of hours. It's been a long time since being on the road with his brother was his life; when tarmac and gas were the blood in his veins. He doesn't stop for a break. He doesn't stop for the thunder, or for the lightning that lights up the black sky like a lighthouse's beam cutting through a storm. He doesn't even stop for the floods that are washing out the road.

Also, I'll write a 100 word drabble for the first prompt that I get to this post (but please keep it short and fairly broad!) EDIT: Prompt filled and is in the comments.

Commit an Act of Kindness.

This is so very in line with what the snowflake challenge is all about, and is something that I'm trying to do a little of everyday; in RL and in fandom. Funnily enough it coincides with a donation that I made to a local charity for taking away my Christmas tree (and for getting it recycled!) I've also granted a few wishes over the last few days (mostly feedback on fanworks) but I will be going through the wishlists again to see if there's anything else that I can do.

I will also add that if you're reading this and you're in need of a little pick me up or any cheerleading, please do send me a message here or PM me and I'll happily send you some love and positive vibes ♥

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

Whenever I see this challenge, my first reaction is to skip it because reccing my own work is something that I always struggle with. But for that very reason, and in the spirit of the snowflake challenge, it's also one that I make myself complete. So here we go;

1. A Very Winchester Christmas (Sam and Dean, gen, PG13, 2500+ words) With Dad on a hunt, and Dean laid up, it's not shaping up to be a great Christmas. But Sam comes up with a plan. Written for the 2018 round of [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas.

2. Saviour (AU J2, PG13, 8700+ words) In a silent world, Jensen is trying to survive, carving out his own isolated and lonely life. But then everything changes when he meets Jared. Written for the 2018 round of [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema.

3. Just Breathe (Sam and Dean, gen, PG13, 1600+ words) Sam's not feeling too great, but Dean's right by his side (set in early season 14). Written for a prompt over at [livejournal.com profile] ohsam.

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you.

I signed up for a new challenge [livejournal.com profile] gencestbang which I'm really excited about! I'm working on my draft now, and I'm looking forward to hopefully working with an artist again (although I've never been through the artist selection process before, so that's kind of nerve wracking and puts the pressure on my summary which I always struggle with!) I also have a handful of your recs to read that I've been storing up, so I'll dip into those too.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

It's funny how some challenges are harder than others, and I always feel a little bit awkward about this one;

1. Comments on any of the fics that I've created are always welcome and here is my masterlist. I'll give a special shout out to A Very Winchester Christmas which is a Sam and Dean gen fic (2500+ words) written for the 2018 round of [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas, and also Saviour which is an AU J2 fic (8700+) written for the 2018 round of [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema and there's gorgeous art from [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams too.
2. A drawble or anything arty for any of my fics is always welcome
3. An SPN gen ficlet/art that sees Sam and Dean enjoying the smaller things in life (a freshly laundered shirt, a comfy pair of slippers etc).
4. I'd like to encourage people to be as active and positive in their fandom as they can! Post and comment, squee and interact, and lets keep our fandoms happy and welcoming places to be.

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

1. A little bit of self-promotion as I lend a hand over there, but I love [livejournal.com profile] spn_littlebro for hurt!Sam/Jared recs because I just adore a little h/c.
2. There's a new challenge that I'm taking part in this year and it's called [livejournal.com profile] gencestbang and the focus is all on Sam and Dean and their strong bond and relationship. I think signups for authors are closed, but it's still open for artists. So keep your eye out for that!
3. SUPERWIKI is my go to place for sourcing all sorts of information; from dates and timelines, to character bios, to weapons and transcripts, etc. It's such a rich source of information and I don't know what I'd do without it.
4. A quick shout out to some of my challenge highlights throughout the year, whether that's taking part or just wallowing in all the fanworks; [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling, [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen, [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang, [livejournal.com profile] sammybigbang, [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas, [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema and [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang to name but a few.

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

I've been making my way through all the wonderful fanworks created for the 2018 round of [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas so I've successfully completed this challenge today and over the last few weeks (there's some familiar faces there, but also some new ones to me!) One of the best things about fandom is meeting new people, and I'm always open to making new friends, so please accept this as an invitation to stop by and say hello.

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Perhaps this is cheating somewhat, but the complicated and often co-dependant relationship between Sam and Dean is what drew me to Supernatural. It's ended the world, it's maybe/definitely unhealthy, but we've been there with them through the highs and lows, and we've seen it grow and develop over the years, and for me it's fascinating to watch, and I can't enough of it! The bickering and banter, the arguments and fallouts, those man-hugs, the tears and smiles, the way they communicate non-verbally - basically, just all of it! For me they're very much a package deal - you can't have one without the other. They are the reason I started watching, and they are the reason I'm still here.

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

I'm addicted to your fanworks and I try to consume as many as I can whether it's art, fic, vids, thinky thoughts, meta, etc, so it's very hard to narrow this down. I'm going to perhaps bend the rules a little here and rec some of my rec lists from a couple of challenges, as well a few fic and art gifts that I've received;

1. Riptide (PG13) by [livejournal.com profile] juliasets for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen. Set in Stanford era we see Sam struggle to be 'normal' and to fit in, and how when a hunt stares him in the face, he really can't ignore his old life.

2. Last year I offered up a few fics for [livejournal.com profile] quicky_bang for the time ever, and incredibly both my entries were snapped up by two of my very favourite artists in this fandom [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams and [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver. Their art always blows me away they created some stunning work based on my fics;

Art for Technicolour Revolution by [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams. (J2 AU Superpowers/Sci fi. In a black and white world where colour is outlawed, Jensen is a bounty hunter who apprehends the mysterious 'Painters' and turns them over to the Company. Then one day Jared shares a secret with Jensen that will change their lives forever.)

Art for The T Shirt by [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver. (SPN Gen AU Stanford era. It's been a long time since Dean's seen Sam, and now they're meeting at 3am on a back road in-the-middle-of-nowhere California.)

3. Here is a list of 10 recs from 2018's [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling

4. Here is a list of 10 recs from 2018's [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen.

ENJOY!

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

I have many happy places! I love snuggling up with a hot drink and a warm blanket, I love my pyjamas and my bed, I love spending quality time with my friends and family wherever that might be, and I love watching movies and TV shows, and I love going for walks outside and connecting with nature and the beauty all around me (especially around the lake near where I live which holds a lot of childhood memories for me).

From a fandom point of view, I love LJ; this is my happy platform place. I love that I can interact with you all and see what fanworks who've created, or thinky thoughts and meta that you've shared, as well as more personal posts too. LJ has connected me with so many wonderful people from all over the world, and I'm so incredibly grateful for that ♥

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers.

I've struggled to find the words for this challenge and how to narrow down my focus. One of the many great things about this challenge is that it makes me reflect and think more deeply about fandom (which I'm sure I'm guilty of taking for granted sometimes).

The heart of what I want to say is thank you. This fandom and my flist have welcomed me with open arms, have encouraged my creativity in so many ways, have cheered me up when I was down, have cried and squeed right beside me, and I know that when I'm here this is a safe place, a warm place, a place where I'm surrounded and supported by friends. So thank you to all of you! Without sounding too sappy, you mean the world to me and I don't know what I'd do without you and this wonderful place in my life ♥

I recently wrote a fic for the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas challenge (it's told through the eyes of a series of outsider POVs at a motel and features hurt!boys) and you can find that here.

I would like to write a drabble, but I can't think of a simple prompt, so if you have any ideas drop me a line and maybe it'll spark some inspiration!

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

Supernatural
introduced me to fandom. Before it, there were many shows that I enjoyed and would watch over and over, but nothing made me seek out more; whether that was spoilers, photos, interviews etc. It was while looking for something more that I stumbled across fanfiction, and then the idea of a fandom community in general.

Over the years my experience of SPN fandom has changed. I've gone from being an anonymous lurker and commenter, to opening accounts and posting stories, to taking part in challenges, and meeting and interacting with a whole group of people who I consider friends. This is a huge thing for me, something that I hope has changed me in a positive way, and certainly something that has enriched my life. So yes, Supernatural has left a mark, and a very big and important one too.
