Title: The Misfit
Summary: 11.09 Drabble. Lucifer, Sam, and a vision that doesn't belong.

The Misfit

It's the nectar of Devils – watching Sam's faith shatter, and his hope die; replaced with juicy anxiety, and the sweetness of fear that sets his taste buds on fire.

But as Lucifer locks his gaze onto his one true vessel, his future home sweet home, he sees something that doesn't belong. He carefully constructed the visions he sent to Sam over hell-centuries of painstaking planning, but that one, the one that he can read at the forefront of Sam's mind, the one that Sam's clinging to, that one isn't his.

That one is tainted with the stench of God.

A/N: I think the revelation that Lucifer was behind Sam's vision fell a little flat for some of us, as we've had our suspicions for a while. I really wanted to explore the idea of a twist here, and to restore a little of Sam's hope and faith *sniff sniff*

Ooh, I LOVE the idea behind this. Because haha, yeah, when I first watched 11x09 I was like uhhhh yeah. Okay... XD But thinking of it from Sam's perspective I can believe that he Believed. I mean, when the alternatives are so untenable, how can you do anything but believe?

But I'd love to see this explored in canon/in an infinite number of fics. FASCINATING. <333

Yes, I can absolutely see from Sam's perspective why he believed and wanted to believe, and I liked how they picked up his faith from previous episodes and seasons too. And while I loved seeing Lucifer again, I felt a little disappointed with the reveal, and I'd love to another twist down the road, just a little hint or clue that maybe God isn't as absent as we thought. I think that would be a fascinating thing to explore.

I was also wondering about whether we've actually seen all Sam's visions? I think we have, but didn't he hint that he was also having dreams? So maybe, maybe...

Yeah, no, I totally agree--the reveal was kind of like, lolll okay, you do you, Show. BUT I'LL GIVE YOU THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, SAM. XDD

I would still love it if the 11x04 dream with John was, indeed, not from Lucifer but from either God or Michael (wherever he slunk off to). TWIST!

Yes, that dream!!! Was it the only dream we saw as well? I feel like the others were more visions, and that the not!John dream stood out as being different (even though there was some sort of Lucifer hint there, I can't remember what but he said something specific that sowed the seed for many people!)

Yes, now I really want a twist! But I guess that's what fandom is for, to share ideas and explore other possibilities :)

I think it's the only dream we saw for sure? But yeah it was completely different from the other visions, considering the others were all snapshots of the Cage and torture. Whereas the John dream was like, hey, I'm proud of you! Chill out! Well, okay, I don't actually remember what he said exactly, but it wasn't about the Cage. And Sam said later that it was weird because John was saying everything Sam wanted to hear, whereas the Cage snapshots certainly wouldn't have been that. So even if they're not from a different source, that's a really interesting interaction between the two strategies to be thinking about, to be sure.

Yes! They were completely different in many ways, but Sam's reaction to it was quite interesting too, especially at it prompted him to talk to Dean about the possibility that god was sending his messages (and I quite liked the idea of Sam and God and then Dean and Amara - not against each other necessarily, but just the sibling issue! But maybe we'll see more of that later?!) *fingers crossed*

So true. I think a lot of us had the reaction, 'well, duh' with respect to that reveal. Even though I totally understand why Sam needed, so desperately, to believe they were from God.
I like this idea though. And it's something I can totally see the SPN-God doing. Creeping in sideways when no-one was looking and sliding in a crafty little vision before scurrying off to wherever he's hiding! And when I imagine this, I'm picturing Chuck!

Thank you for your always thoughtful comments! I can absolutely understand Sam wanting it to be God, and I loved that they picked up previous references to his faith, but yeah, I think we all kinda had a suspicion who was actually behind the visions, and I was craving another twist, and I love the idea of a hint or tiny clue that maybe God isn't as absent as we thought. And yes, another mysterious visit from Chuck, with hints that he could be what we think he is, would be most welcome.

I love this. I totally agree, I knew it was either Gabe or Luci when John showed up, and then I figured it out. I really really REALLY wish they would do something about the God issue!!! And if/when they do, I'd love it to be through Sam, b/c no matter what, he holds to faith in God. Don't get me wrong, I have all kinds of wrong love for Lucifer LOL, and I adore Mark P. But please, can Sam please get some kind of something at all from God.Dean got Cas after all. (not in any way referring to shipping, just as a friend from heaven ya know?) So, let me say again, I LOVE THIS!!!!!

I couldn't agree more, seeing Lucifer again was awesome, but we did all have our suspicions, and I think it would be a great secondary twist to see a little tiny something that hints that God is still around, and fighting for the Winchesters. And I don't want to see Sam lose his faith, I really enjoyed seeing Show referring to this from earlier seasons.

Thank you! I would love to see some development with the God story line, especially since we now know that Amara is his sister. Plus I like the idea of Show just hinting that he might be around, and I actually enjoyed seeing them pick up on Sam's faith from previous seasons.

UGH I was holding onto Sam's belief and hoping it wasn't Lucifer...and it was. So I wasn't disappointed with the reveal as much as purely upset for Sammy (because his faith has been dashed so many times, that poor boy) but I would love for something like this to happen! So much! Lovely drabble :)

Thank you so much for stopping by! Yes, it was so hard seeing Sam's faith take yet another hit, and while I enjoyed seeing them pick this aspect of his character up from other seasons, I too was hoping there was another answer, because poor, poor Sam!

I think I'd love to see another twist here, not just to restore Sam's faith and hope, but also because just a little hint that maybe God isn't so absent, could be such a tantalizing tease at this point, especially after the other reveal of Amara being his sister.

Brilliant :D I'm really loving these different angles and possibilities you find in each episode.
It would be amazing if there was a vision from God, though just the whole concept of Sam's faith is interesting (especially with his lifestyle), it really keeps him going, it's heartbreaking to see that shattered for him.
