Snowflake Challenge - Day 11

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life.

Supernatural
introduced me to fandom. Before it, there were many shows that I enjoyed and would watch over and over, but nothing made me seek out more; whether that was spoilers, photos, interviews etc. It was while looking for something more that I stumbled across fanfiction, and then the idea of a fandom community in general.

Over the years my experience of SPN fandom has changed. I've gone from being an anonymous lurker and commenter, to opening accounts and posting stories, to taking part in challenges, and meeting and interacting with a whole group of people who I consider friends. This is a huge thing for me, something that I hope has changed me in a positive way, and certainly something that has enriched my life. So yes, Supernatural has left a mark, and a very big and important one too.

I love reading about people's fandom origin stories. Thank you for sharing yours. SPN fandom is an amazing one.

Thank you for stopping by!!! I always find origin stories interesting too, and SPN opened my eyes to a whole world I didn't know was out there! Take care :)

An indelible one, at that. Thing is it's not even about the show, I mean it is but...Okay let me explain, lol. The show is my favourite show, has been my favourite show for the last thirteen years, and will remain my favourite long after it stops airing, but the show itself for me is a separate entity now. My love of the SPN fandom isn't contingent on the show airing, and my love of the show isn't contingent on the fandom. The best example of this is when the entire of fandom is up in arms about some supposed mis-step in an episode, and I can quite happily love the episode regardless. An the same can be said for the fandom itself. All manner of hoohar can be happening and I either try not to pay it much mind (I know I had a slip a few months back) and I continue to adore the fandom itself.

Yep, a definite indelible mark.

Huh, I never get a THIS^^^ lol!

I love this, and well said *round of applause* ♥

It's kind of like how sometimes I love hiatus's because as a community we're always active; whether it's comms or challenges, or thoughts and memes, regardless of whether the show is airing or not.

Yes, this, Hellatus might be, as previous mentioned, hell, but during it we all rally round and create, chat, have a laugh, keep the home fires burning for the show to return :)

Exactly - there's such a hum of possibility and community, and a real sense of a gathering of friends :)

I used to dread Hiatus, mainly because I was a lurker in fandom but now I kinda look forward to it, with all the challenges and exchanges and the fics and art that always happen during it.

Exactly - it's a treasure trove of activity and excitement!!!

We are so spoiled, lol! I love it. An embarrassment of riches.

Me too! The farthest I'd got with anything else I'd watched was making up stories in my head, maybe occasionally writing them down for my own delectation - and I had NO idea there was such a thing as fanart or fanfiction before SPN. It's definitely been life changing.

Hehe - snap!!! I used to sort of make stories and scenarios up in my head (usually h/c things!), but I'd never written them down and then while looking for spoilers and info, I stumbled across ffnet and fic, and then fanart and fandom as a whole! I honestly can't imagine what I'd be doing without it.

I love how fandom just kind of sucks you in. It's a slippery slope. *g*

Hehe, that's a great way of putting it! And yes, once you're involved it's hard not to get more involved :)

This is so lovely! I love hearing about what a positive thing fandom community can be. ♥ Glad you found your way here! And good to know I'm not the only one who is guilty of past lurking... ;)

[identity profile] madebyme-x.livejournal.com 2018-01-17 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I was a lurker for a long time! And then I started to comment on things anonymously, and then I got an account, and then before I knew it I was writing and posting fics, and then taking part in challenges and comms. It's natural fandom progression, I guess ;)

I'm very happy you made it here as well! ♥
