Summary: 13.17 Drabble. Separating is never a good idea.

Separation Anxiety

Tar-sticky bitterness is stuck in Sam's throat. It's not that he doesn't trust Dean to do this, and to come back; their relationship has come further than that over the years.

But seeing Dean choose to leave with Ketch over him still hurts; logic or no logic. Sam's already calling Cas, and mixing ingredients, because he's never been good at taking orders from anyone.

“You shouldn't have done that spell.” Gabriel's voice is gravel-rough, his lips red-raw. “There's something you don't know.”

Sam's guts freeze over at Gabriel's words. He almost forgot that bad things always happen when they separate.



A/N: I really enjoyed this episode - it felt like a great balance between a case and myth arc, and I felt like I got a good dose of boys in the mix too! I enjoyed the brotherly banter and pranks, and there were some great shots (I loved seeing Sam and Dean jump down the manhole!) The absence of Cas felt odd to me, especially when he has also been to the AU world and can therefore do the spell. I'm with Sam on this one; while I can see the logic, I'm not a fan of the brothers separating and I've focused on this for the drabble as well as expanding on the idea that maybe Gabriel's lips were sewn shut because he knows something. As always I'd love to hear your thoughts too; on the episode, on the drabble, on everything (just no spoilers please). This is exactly the way I wish the show had left us in this episode. Perfect coda: of course Sam's hurt, however irrationally, that Dean would "choose" Ketch over him. And of course he wouldn't just stand there watching the clock while Dean's gone. And Gabriel's little foreboding comment --- ack! Yes!!! I loved this episode, too and am excited for the next few weeks!

Thank you - I'm so happy that you enjoyed this! Whether Sam waits 24 hours or not, I guess we'll have to see, but I would hope that he would call Cas as soon as possible. I just like the idea that Gabriel's mouth is closed to stop he sharing something that he knows. Love the hint at what is going on with Gabriel! And yes, I wondered why they couldn't wait for Cas--or at least say that he was too far away and Dean was too impatient. I did love all the Sam and Dean interactions!

The Sam and Dean interactions were great - I really enjoyed those too. And it felt like they took the centre stage more in this episode, which is just how I like it to be. I do like the idea that Gabriel's lips were closed because he knows something, and yes, why they couldn't at least mention Cas in passing is annoying!!! I'm looking forward to seeing where they take it :)

Ooh, I hadn't actually given much thought to why Gabriel's mouth was sown shut, but love your take on it here. So foreboding ahhhhh. I also really enjoyed this episode, for all the reasons you mentioned! Lots of great brother moments. As for the ending, I always prefer the boy's together, though I'm curious to see how things will play out. Like you showed here, I think there's good odds Sam will end up going after Dean...

This is AMAZING. Gabriel's "There's something you don't know" is the best thing that has every happened to me, probably. Ah! I love the foreboding of that, and the way that feeling wheedles its way into the description of Gabriel's lips separating, Sam and Dean separating (I am also not a fan asj;ak), and into Sam's hurt at that gut-level, is absolutely gorgeous. I adore this drabble to pieces.

\o/ Thank you!!! I really got to thinking what if Gabriel's lips were sewn shut for a reason, like maybe he knows something, and I really wanted to raise that idea here. Yes, I'm not a fan of their separation either but I did appreciate seeing how much Sam hated the idea of Dean choosing Ketch over him because I think most of us felt that string too. My take on Dean's reasoning for going alone - and letting Ketch tag along - is partly that Gabriel needs someone to care for him and he obviously trusts Sam - I loved how gentle Sam was cutting the stitches from Gabe's mouth (ouch, poor Gabriel!).

This drabble is perfect and exactly how the episode should've ended. It made no sense not to call Cas, and it was weird how quickly Dean wanted to get going - perhaps he suspects the spell is jinxed and didn't want Sam to find out. I love this, it gave me chills...

Yes, it was nice to see Sam being caring of Gabriel, and I suspect the writers just needed an excuse to split the boys up, even if there was no real logic there. I mean sure, using Sam as a back up is a great idea, but surely that's Cas's job!

I do like the idea that Gabriel's knows something important, hence the sewn lips, so I though why not add that in here. I'm not fond of seeing the boys separated, but I am looking forward to seeing where this takes us. Thank you for you lovely comment and I'm happy you enjoyed the drabble :)

I love the whole episode! it was everything I was hoping for :)

and although so many fans don't agree with the ending of Dean leaving with Ketch. I actually saw the growth in this.

In the past when they always separate-like we all hated, if you remember it's was always when either where hurt, angry and stomp off pride in front of the other choosing to do it on their own because well they are too damn stubborn and angry to see clearly at the moment and we the audience are left yelling "NOOO" don't do it alone, it sucks when you guys separate, something always bad happens/goes wrong!!!".

This time Dean talk to Sam, they needed do it this way, and if it fails, Sam is the back-up plan. As for choosing Ketch...its like everyone is forgetting he said He doesn't care if Ketch dies..which I am betting he will....the writers hint at Ketch looking for redemption (Having Asmodeus say that- could be a fore-shadow of Ketch upcoming Death?)

Something like what Gadreel did in the end to redeem himself- one life to give up for the others? I could be 100% wrong but in SPN you never know...

Back to why I this time didn't disagree of them separating- i was still at the edge of my seat, but this time Dean was talking to Sam and sharing why, but yes being the big brother. but being rational- i know a lot of fans don't like it- its also why i love that Dean said those words:
I' know you don't like it I don't expect you too, but this is the way its going to be'(I feel he was also talking to the fans- my head canon of course- but it fits ;) )

I am hoping Sam being left behind that the writers will touch on Sam own torture past- that he is probably the only on who could reach Gabriel (after who else know years/centuries of torture?and being broken? or they might gloss over it like they doe in the past and never share that link, but keeping my fingers cross that they don't..

Okay I keep rambling- my apologies- but Basically I like it the whole episode- this time to me nothing was wrong- even Ketch's role- but that is just me--

Thank you for stopping by! I think I just didn't like how the writers tackled it; we saw the boys separate in 12.22 where they talked it through together as a team and trusted each other to do their jobs separately and come back safely. That felt like progress to me; seeing the trust and faith they have in each other. This separation came across more like a one sided order and less like a team working together. I think the writers want them to separate, which is fine, but perhaps they could have tweaked it a little to make more palatable and reasonable.

But like you said the writers clearly have a plan and I am looking forward to seeing where we're heading next (being from the UK I haven't seen 13.18 yet so I'm looking forward to getting home after work!) Thanks again for stopping by :)
