Hush, Little Baby

You feel it deep within as soon as you see her; an echo of something you've been craving for a long time.

You barely fight Sam on the plan; you let him be the bait, so that you can be the protector. You'll vet the temporary family; make sure she's safe until the time comes.

You've felt this before; with Sam, Ben, and maybe even Emma. But like the Darkness said, this does feel different; the three of you belong together, a true family, and their call is burning a new Mark just above your heart.

Soon, you'll be reunited.

A/N - I was thinking about why the Darkness took a female form for Dean, and thought that I'd allude to more of a 'family' vibe; with Dean, the Darkness, and their baby.

This is so delightfully eerie, playing with both themes of family and also wrongness, things that should be indelible in the Winchester world, even as the shadows at the corners seep forward. Love this!

This is both beautiful and chilling, I love how The Darkness has zeroed in on Dean's urge to protect and his need for family. I loved this line...

"... their call is burning a new Mark just above your heart."

Yes, I love the idea of the Darkness using Dean's need to protect and save his family in this way. I found it eerie to think about the three of them as a family; literal, or not!

Oh. Yes. One of my nitpicks with the ep. was that they left the baby with her infected father for so long. If Dean recognized the Darkness in her he would have known she wouldn't be harmed.... I love this.

And yes now that you mention it, it did seem weird that both Dean and Sam left the baby with the infected father for so long, and if Dean felt that she was connected to the Darkness, that would explain a lot. Great point!

It's also kinda eerie to think about the three of them being connected together, like some sort of 'uncanny' family.

I think that Show alluded that they just might be the same person, but I liked the possibility at this early point in the season to explore the idea that maybe they're not. And then to take it a step further to maybe see a family of three (plus the Darkness did show itself as a woman!)

That's an interesting possibility to play around with--The Darkness making itself into a woman who would appeal to Dean and then creating a child; essentially creating Dean his own family, knowing how important family is to Dean. I mean, there was a lot of black fog. Who's to say, at this stage, that the Darkness didn't split itself up into more than one 'person'? Intriguing idea.

Thank you for stopping by. It does seem like Show is heavily hinting that the Darkness and the baby are the same thing, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to explore this avenue while we're still early on in the season, and everything is still a little 'up in the air'.

I find it an interesting possibility that the Darkness would take Its bond with Dean a little further, to have a family of three (literal, or not!) to take advantage of his strong family values. And yes, there was a lot of black fog, so I guess the possibilities are endless!! Thanks again for reading :)

While I think Show is hinting that the Darkness and the baby may be the same thing, I thought I'd explore this idea now while I could. There's something so creepy about the idea that the Darkness would chose a female form on purpose, to take advantage of Dean's protectiveness towards family, and then use that to sustain Its bond with Dean; a family of (Darkness) three (literal, or not!)

I have to confess that initially I thought the baby and woman were separate people - sharing the mark. But yeah, the show suggests they are they same - which is quite interesting. I'm really looking forward to where they go with that.

I love the idea of family. And I really love the idea that Dean is connected because of that reason.

On my first view, I thought they were separate too. But after reading reactions, fics, drabbles etc and then re-watching, I see more now that they might be the same.

Perhaps it would be more interesting if they were separate though, more ambiguous maybe? But yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing which direction they're going to take it (I mean kid baddies are kinda awesome, I was always quite fond of kid Lilith! So creepy!)

Yes, seeing Dean's connection to the Darkness as one of family is powerful. I'd love to see Show go here! Yikes!

It's a creepy and wonderful thought that the Darkness could potentially be this manipulative; that It would know that of course Dean will feel a strong bond and protectiveness towards his new family of three.

Women, and more so family, are two of Dean Winchester's biggest weaknesses, so it makes sense to me if evil wanted to get a foothold with him, it would present itself as one or the other - or both. This very nicely plays with that idea. It's insidious really - taking his protective instincts and using them against him. Can't wait to see how they play with this. Nice work.

It's interesting to wonder about the motivations of the Darkness, and why It chose the form It did. I like to think that it was done purposely, for manipulation and evil ways - mainly because I'm cruel like that ;)

But yes, it would make sense that It would take advantage of Dean's protectiveness and strong family values, and I do like the idea of a family of (Darkness) three. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take this too. Bring it on Show!

Aww, Dean and his family values! Very cool, that you would play on that! Also - I agree that Amara is not necessarily even The Darkness! She could be a new lock (I mean, they are borrowing fron Buffy anyway....), or - anorher force freed, another thing that is still unknown - the zombies weren't necessarily part of The Darnkess, so maybe Amara/Amar's state isn't either?!
